Karzai Presents His Ministerial Nominees To Parliament

President Karzai is expected to present his nominees for cabinet posts to parliament for approval on Saturday

Karzai is expected to keep some key figures when he submits a list of 24 names -- of a total of 25 cabinet posts, a presidential palace official said.

He tries to balance Western demands for an honest government against those of Jehadi leaders seeking political paybacks for supporting his re-election, members of Parliament informed of his choices said.

Since his re-election, Mr Karzai has come under intense pressure from the United States and other backers to clean up his government and improve its performance.

Presenting his nominees would be the first test of his commitment to clean, accountable government, Afghan analysts say.

Nominees are expected to include the current ministers of defence, interior, finance, health and education.

Karzai's ministerial nominees must win the approval of parliamentarians in a process that could take days to complete, with each nominee making a speech to justify their appointment.

They must also answer questions from MPs about how they intend to do their job, and then face a ballot of MPs for their approval.

The ministries of energy and urban development have been given to Ismail Khan and Gul Agha Shairzai respectively, according to a source, both former Jehadi leaders whose support Karzai has long relied on.

Karzai had nominated 11 current ministers to remain in their jobs, an official said. Four ministers are being reshuffled, while eight are new.
